Bio: our story.
An enormous diesel pickup chugs its way down the street, announcing itself before coming into sight. The behemoth is loaded top to bottom with musical gear. As the giant engine huffs to a stop and the doors swing open, the last thing one expects to see emerge is the two petite, shorter than average women of roots music group Alathea. In the case of principal singer / songwriter Mandee Radford its difficult to imagine how she elevates her barely five foot frame into the giant truck, or how band mate Cristi Johnson can generate enough power in her rail-thin legs to work the clutch. But such focus would only highlight the surface of Alathea, as would mention of the historic log cabin the duo occupies at the foothills of the Appalachians or the music business ups and downs they have endured or the effects of a bizarre, life-threatening illness suffered by Radford in the midst of a band rebirth. And yet the real substance of Alathea comes from the unexpected, the underground and the out of sight. The duos fourth full-length recording, My Roots Grow Deeper, conveys a depth of thought, insight and care that is rare in a surface age, and which puts on display the reason for their continually expanding community of supporters. And thats what Alathea has developed: community, not fans. My Roots Grow Deeper was produced by up and comer Matt Stanfield, known for working with textured acoustic pop artists. Creative chemistry developed, and Stanfield was a pitch-perfect foil to help the roots-based band take their music in a different sonic direction. We wanted it to be a fusion using our traditional bluegrass instruments but in a modern way, says Radford. Matt is very precise, adds Johnson, Instead of fishing around for a good idea, he knows exactly what he wants, waiting for THE take, the performance. The results bear out in everyones favor. My Roots Grow Deeper is a full and textured record, thoroughly modern yet absent of any cliché studio trickery or gimmicky hybrids. Led by Radfords clear-as-a-bell vocals, and complemented by Johnsons smoky harmonies, the song cycle delivers an emotional and atmospheric ride as dynamic as the mountain view they glimpse from their East Tennessee cabin. Alathea (the Greek word for truth) was formed in 1997 in Johnson City, TN. Radford, Johnson and Carrie Theobald met in college and embarked on their musical journey soon after. After two independent recordings handled on their own, the trios third album, What Light Is All About, was subsequently picked up by Nashville-based independent Rocketown Records in 2003. The label deal brought with it myriad new opportunities, but the vagaries of the record business and the slow-burn approach to growth led the two parties to part ways in 2005. That same year, the trio that had recorded three albums and toured hundreds of dates hit a monumental crossroads as instrumentalist / singer Carrie Theobald announced her intent to leave the group, and Alathea was suddenly a duo. Also in 2005, the group went on a trip to Honduras with child sponsor / community development agency Compassion International, with whom they have worked for years (they sponsor a child in Honduras). Upon their return, Radford became violently ill, and the sickness had legs, causing Alathea to cancel concerts and wrestle with how to maintain their livelihood. After extensive treatments, multiple hospital stays, and eventual surgery, Radford comments, The doctor the other day said youll probably never get back to normal, but I like to think, what is normal anyway? In the midst of the medical scavenger hunt, Alathea set out to record My Roots Grow Deeper. For the indie-minded duo, who have learned and handled every bit of their music and business from day one, the process was not so much letting go as having no option but to open themselves to the collaboration with Stanfield and see the results surpass their expectations. As Johnson explains, Weve always tried to have a say in every studio decision, and this time, we were in a position where we couldnt do that because we were focused on Mandees health. Radford continues, We somehow ended up with a project that we would have worked really hard to try to make happen, the project we would have wanted, but we just had to go along for the ride. Im way less intense than I used to be because I dont have the energy to question or worry about things. With the new recording, it was wonderful to just trust Matt with everything. While Stanfield worked with the arrangements in the studio, Radford and Johnson poured time and energy into reworking their live show to reflect one less voice and a third less accompaniment. Radford incorporated resonator guitar and greater use of banjo in addition to her regular guitar work while Johnson added more mandolin, dulcimer, and harmonica and thoroughly reworked the harmonies. The vacated space has been elegantly re-imagined to allow for the purity of the songs and vocals to move front and center. An evening with Alathea also includes a master class in story telling, as Radford adroitly weaves down-home tales of friends and experiences in rural East Tennessee with profound insights into the deeper matters of the human condition. All of this is accomplished while busting audience guts with laughter, as wit and delivery frame the hilarious stories. My Roots Grow Deeper abounds with themes of a stubborn determination to continue with what one is supposed to do throughout the setbacks. Parallels can be seen to any number of circumstances, not the least of which could be the changing tides of a music business tempted to obsess over image and perception as prime motivators, rather than the pursuit of an authentic artistic life. And while that can sound naïvely idealistic, few can relate to the tangible struggles of living an artistic life more than working artists searching for diesel for the truck, food for the day and safe shelter at night. Says Radford in explanation of the title song, A friend was telling us that if you look at a tree you see how tall it is, but the root system you dont see is sometimes double the length of the tree. And most of whats supporting and feeding that tree is hidden, and you often cant see the results of that. For us the bottom line is we want to keep making music. It doesnt have to blow up and be this huge thing we just want to keep doing it. Adds Johnson, I think this idea also parallels personal faith. A lot of the circles we find ourselves in, theres this way your faith is supposed to look a comparative evaluation based on where you go, what book youre reading, what political agenda you align with all of those things can be decent, but theyre measuring something that isnt accurate. So its having the determination to say, Im going to figure out what my faith is about outside of the measuring stick regardless of how that comes across. Thats becoming more and more of what were talking about and thinking through just figuring out what is significant and what does matter, and how can we live in a way that we wont miss everything good thats happening because were trying to look good, to measure up. The album is filled with sharp insights and a steely purpose that is integrated in the musical and lyrical result. The dynamic range is broad, showing the duos deft ability to compose roiling, blues-based songs (Hurricane), written, hauntingly enough, several months before Katrina struck the gulf coast, upbeat, pop-inflected material (Morning Birds; Feels Like A Million Miles), emotional ballads (One More Angel; Farthest Shore) and even flexing their interpretive muscles on a cover of Gillian Welchs classic Orphan Girl. One More Angel was written out of several experiences of loss within their community of friends, and none felt more sharply than the death of their long time friend, collaborator and musical mentor Ted Francisco, a local East Tennessee musician who succumbed to cancer in 2005. My Roots Grow Deeper is dedicated to Franciscos memory. Another thing that is sensed whenever one spends time in the presence of Radford & Johnson is that people feel invited and included in their music and lives. The groups per-capita fans to friends ratio could well be a leader in any genre. Explains Radford, Jesus was about inclusion and acceptance and freedom. And I think in our country weve made Jesus about exclusion and guilt and a lot of things that are opposite of what he was about. I dont want to perpetuate that lie anymore. I dont want to be a part of that lie, I want to be a part of the truth of what he was. That spirit allows Alathea to connect to anyone, anywhere, simply by being invitational in the way they approach their craft and their lives. And while their lyrics display a sharp intellect and grounding in the work of influential artists, it is the unresolved honesty of how the songs are conveyed that marks Alatheas work. Says Johnson, we hope these songs resonate as true that people feel something familiar and close to home because weve been honest. BIO written by Dave Palmer
Community fosters stories and songs. These literary and musical tales are refined in the midst of mayhem, refreshed by mountain air and packed up in the back of a diesel truck all while fiery and charming women focus on living each moment well and asking questions every step of the way.Combined with a vagabond traveling-musician lifestyle, all these elements could add up to a full-time Bonnaroo-meets-crazy-commune, but when it comes to Alathea, the duo consisting of Mandee Radford and Cristi Johnson Reilly, seemingly separate entities somehow work perfectly together. After meeting in college and performing together for more than a decade, Alathea the Greek word for truth-upends convention and simply refuses to be defined by anyones expectations. And that approach has taken Alathea around the country and across the world averaging over 150 concerts, festivals and special events each year that include NPRs Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour, Pennsylvanias acclaimed Musikfest, Bristols Rhythm and Roots Reunion, main stage appearances at Youth Specialties National Conferences as well as performances in Europe and Asia.Winners of numerous acoustic music and songwriting awards, including the 2011 We Are Listening International Singer/Songwriter competition (the song "Broken Record" from Tremble) and Best Group/Duo at the International Acoustic Music Awards (2010) Alathea takes stories from their own lives and weaves them into music thats instantly relatable. Perhaps such relevance is because the music is born from community; perhaps its through the intentional effort to find the modern in the traditional and to complement roots-based, acoustic music with vocal purity and smoky harmonies. Sonically, the duo is hard to pin down as Alathea stretches from singer/songwriter fare to blues-influenced tracks to bluegrass-inflected pop tunes, creating a sound reminiscent of artists like Indigo Girls, Mindy Smith and Patty Griffin. We love to read, to make music and to write, says Cristi. After 12 years of playing music, this is still making us feel alive and part of something holy, even while chaos and all manner of exhaustion is circling around us.Living, Loving and CreatingSeeing the holy in the chaos is a particularly special gift of Alathea, and is reflected in the songwriting of their most recent album, Tremble (2010), produced by Matt Stanfield. Recorded in Nashville during Cristis pregnancy with Samuel, who was born in August 2010, the albums title track is colored by the new life that immediately expanded the traveling band. The smallest, tiniest, most seemingly insignificant things can change everything, Cristi says. Before Samuel was born, he had already altered our lives forever. And so the songs from Tremble are about being open to moments of clarity in the smallest events of everyday life. The song Common Ground germinated from a visit to a cathedral in Austria, when Mandee had the bizarre experience of witnessing one beggar beating another. It turned out one beggar was mad that another had infiltrated her prime begging spot.Mandee explains, Its a crazy picture of what we do sometimes. We stand at the entrance to the cathedral of goodness and grace, and we mark our spot and guard our turf. We don't want to let any other beggars in. We just seem to beat each other up, keeping out the folks who act differently, live differently. But as beggars who need grace, shouldnt we be standing at the entrance, throwing the doors open wide, saying theres room enough in here for everyone? she continues. As it turns out, not until we fail ourselves, maybe even hit rock bottom, are we able to see that were all pretty much the same. Common beggars on common ground.Whats next? The story contines for Alathea in 2012, as the duo plans to release a live CD, a double-disc childrens collection and a book of their musings and writings from the road. All of the projects are currently in the early stages of development, under production as the band tours the country in support of Tremble. While the book will be a written memoir of sorts with the women sharing thoughts on life and faith, the CD projects represent audio accounts in a similar vein, tracing the impact of motherhood and touring. The two-CD childrens set will include both an up-tempo album and a lullaby disc, offering songs about everything from blueberry jam to flying a kite. Meanwhile, the live album will feature highlights from the entire Alathea discography, including Common Ground, Tremble and Rescue from their latest release as well as crowd favorites Hurricane and Indian Creek from past albums.Alathea certainly has plenty of life material to inspire songs new and old. Cristis marriage to Justin in 2008, and Samuels birth have added new dimensions to the band, and Mandees wedding this fall will expand the Alathea family even more. Though the community keeps growing, the women are realizing that life changes, dramatic though they may be at times, are merely different settings for the ever-present stage of love and compassion.Being the mother of Samuel is a change of scenery on steroids, laughs Cristi, but at the end of the day, its not just about me and my experience. Its whether or not I loved well in my experience... loved my baby, and all the other folks Ive encountered, which are not exclusive because I cannot love my baby well while ignoring the needs around me. Cristi continues, Were learning to love, hoping to love well, husbands, baby, music, the earth and all of its people. Love is the constant, and everything else is just a change of scenery.Of course, changes of scenery often bring their own challenges, accompanying good times like party-crashing chaperones. Soon after Tremble was recorded, Cristi went into labor, delivering Samuel six weeks early and leading to a lengthy and frightening stay in a neonatal intensive care unit. Mandee recalls being reminded of the Old Testament biblical story of the Ebenezer stone, a rock intended to remind us all of God as our Help and Rescuer.Mandee says, I think that God knows that I am the kind of follower who is prone to forget, so He put me down in these East Tennessee mountains that have become my own Ebenezer stones. When were driving home and the mountain appears, I remember the God who is our help our help when I've left my best friend and her husband standing beside their tiny child in an incubator, or our help when we've been on the road for a month and haven't seen the stars in what feels like years. God is our help, here in this place, this mountain cove, where cell phones have no signals, where tweeting is done by all manner of birds, where silence still exists. God is our help, and He put us in these mountains because he knew we would need big reminders.Songs as Ebenezer StonesAnd thats an appropriate metaphor for Cristi and Mandee themselves, talented Ebenezer stones who wrap their reminders of love and presence and faith in songs and deliver from the back of a massive pickup truck to whomever is willing to listen. Cristi says, One of the things were figuring out is that if youre going to keep writing, you have to keep living and learning. If you want to write about community, you have to live community. If you want to tell stories, you have to pay attention to your own story and all the stories that are happening around you.Living a mere 48 steps from one anothers front doors, Mandee and Cristi have learned the value in using what youve got, whether thats finding the perfect sound in an unexpected instrument or discovering a dinner feast in nearly empty cabinets. They approach their music in the same way they approach life, with passion, energy and gratitude for all that they've been given. We know were quirky. We live a cabin in the mountains, drive a diesel truck, live next door to each other, share everything, including dinner every night. And God meets us in all the details. Its our hope that folks, as they think about Alathea and our songs and our stories, will reflect on their own unique story, their own days where God shows up over and over again in the details.Community. Stories and songs. Mayhem and mountains. Faith and mystery. Seemingly separate entities that somehow are better together.written by April Hefner

farthest shore
[ SONG LYRICS ]HALLS OF HEAVEN -- an allegory of the cabinEven at two in the afternoon the house still has a chillIt sits in the shadowsright up against the hillsIve been looking for the source of the reflections on the wallI walk out to the fieldfeel the sunbeams fallIt is holyA little bit of glory escapesFrom the halls of heavenA little bit of glory escapesSeems like everyone is waiting to cross over JordanEyes to the other shorethis one forgottenYou cant tell me the kingdomof God isnt hereas you watch the morning fog roll inthen disappearIt is holyA little bit of glory escapesFrom the halls of heavenA little bit of glory escapesThe silence of God is stilllouder than our screamingwe think Hes quietbut, oh, He is speakingIn the face of the sufferingwho cry out to usWhen we touch, we are touchingthe wounds of JesusThey are holyA little bit of glory escapesFrom the halls of heavenA little bit of glory escapesIt is holyOh the glory escapesFrom the halls of heavenA little bit of glory escapes
tell me
[ SONG LYRICS ]CAN'T KEEP FROM SINGINGThere is a peaceThat passes my understandingI have a needTo know the deep deep meaningSo I search my heartAnd I find the sourceThere is a peace There is a prayerUnspoken and still and formlessSubtle as airAnd everything changed before thisWith patience we waitHere in this placeThere is a prayerThere is a faithOh how it bears repeatingIn poems and songsThat I cant keep from singingThey play in my headWhen every words been saidThere is a faithThere is a faithAnd I cant keep from singing
o great god
[ SONG LYRICS ]O GREAT GOD - a hymnO great GOD of the strong triumphantSinging oer the crowdYou are the same GOD of the broken bleeding Covered in a shroudMay our warring ceaseAs we serve the Prince of PeaceThe One true GOD who reigns victorious Died between two thievesAll hail the King in the golden templeSitting on the throneStill He walks beside the widow womanWounded and aloneHe holds her hand and weepsHes the God, the one who seesthe hurt we hide in our prisoned heartsand by his wounds, were freeOh Sprit moving in tongues of firehovering oer the seaFound a home in the heart of a man, who walks among the sheepOh great Spirit breatheOh Good Shepherd leadUs to a place where faith unites usas one in our great need
